Description:
The Great Mother and The Great Doctor sculptures were relocated in August 2008 to the School of the Future in West Fairmount Park from the Youth Study Center at 20th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The statues were created by Waldemar Raemisch who also sculpted The Preacher for the Ellen Phillips Samuel Memorial Sculpture Garden. Both statues form two groups each with a seated, central figure surrounded by children and adults. The Mother and a Doctor are meant to serve as positive role models for children by representing society's caregivers, comforters, healers and guiders. The sculptures were initiated by the City of Philadelphia to epitomize the spirit of children and their need for nurturing and care. They were relocated due to the imminent demolition of the Youth Study Center.
