The Philadelphia Historical Commission (PHC) is responsible for the preservation of historic resources within the City of Philadelphia. The PHC keeps track of all buildings, structures, sites, objects or districts designated as historic, and also reviews all applications for renovations to these listed properties. The Commission is made up of a 14-member governing council consisting of several City agency representatives, including the Commissioner of Public Property.

Jonathan Farnham is the Acting Historic Preservation Director of
the Philadelphia Historical Commission, the City agency that regulates
historic preservation. He received his M.A. in Art History from
the University of Massachusetts and his M.A. in Architecture and
Ph.D. in Architectural History, Theory, and Criticism from the School
of Architecture at Princeton University. Until recently, he served
as the president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Society of Architectural
Historians. He lectures nationally on Philadelphia’s architectural,
engineering, and city planning histories. He has published several
articles on these intertwined histories including essays in the
Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Technology and
Culture, and Grey Room. A forthcoming article addresses city planning
and political corruption in Philadelphia, 1907-1911.
