 Playing Angels
Artist: Carl Milles (1875-1955)
Location: Kelly Drive at Fountain Green Drive
Installed in 1972

With their youthful innocence appealing to the masses, Carl Milles' Playing Angels have received love from Philadelphians since the city became their home. The three musical angels are cast from a group of five originals located in Millesgarden in Stockholm, Sweden.

As a youth, Swedish born Carl Milles studied art at night school, while by day, he was an apprentice to a cabinetmaker. Before becoming an assistant to sculptor Auguste Rodin, the artist behind The Thinker, Milles sold souvenirs and worked for a coffin maker to earn a living.

While five casts of the Stockholm angels were originally produced for a private site, those plans fell through, and Fairmount Park purchased three of the angels for Philadelphia. The fourth angel went to Kansas City, and the fifth to Falls Church.
