- The mission of the Department of Streets is to provide functionally clean and safe streets in a cost-effective and efficient manner. It carries out its mission through four divisions: Sanitation; Highways; Engineering, which includes Design, Lighting, and Traffic units; and Administration. In general, the Department of Streets builds and maintains the City's thoroughfares and bridges; performs survey work for the City government and private citizens; studies and solves traffic problems; oversees street lighting; cleans the streets; and collects and disposes of rubbish and garbage.

- Established pursuant to the City Charter adopted in 1951, the Department of Streets assumed the functions of the Department of Public Works' Bureaus of Highways, Street Cleaning, Lighting, and Surveys, and those of the Bureau of Traffic Engineering of the Department of Public Safety. The department's activities include engineering design and survey, street and bridge construction and maintenance, street lighting, traffic engineering, and collection and disposal of refuse.
