The administrative functions of the commission were assumed by the Office of Education in 1972.

Agency History
The Philadelphia Commission on Higher Education was established on 11 June 1958 by Mayor Richardson Dilworth with a charged task of addressing the present and anticipated availability of higher educational opportunities in the Philadelphia area. Mayor Dilworth also placed control of administering the Mayor's Scholarship and City Scholarship programs with the Philadelphia Commission on Higher Education. Among its lasting contributions was its leading role in the development of the Community College of Philadelphia. The Commission was dissolved and its administrative functions assumed by the Office of Education on 21 January 1972.
