Consider that:
- Fewer than half (48%) of Philadelphia school children can read at grade level by the end of third grade.
- Not being able to read at grade level by the end of third grade results in a greater likelihood of delinquent behavior and the potential to drop out of school.
- Almost 85% of children who appear in juvenile court lack basic reading skills
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
PHILADELPHIA READS works to ensure that all of Philadelphia's children, in grades 1st through 3rd, are reading at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. In pursuit of this goal, we recruit, train, and place Reading Coaches in schools, after-school, community and faith-based literacy programs throughout the city.
All reading coaches are provided with extensive training prior to site placement. This helps ensure that all reading coaches are equipped with the skills, techniques, and understanding necessary to be a successful literacy mentor.
