Become a Reading Coach!
|
Imagine not being able to read a book, a newspaper or communicate in writing. Now imagine being a teenager or adult and facing these same challenges. Unfortunately, many children are growing up without a firm foundation in reading and writing. They are ill prepared to address the challenges that await them in adulthood. However, YOU CAN HELP! |

|
PHILADELPHIA READS is working to ensure that all of Philadelphia's children, in grades 1st through 3rd, are reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade. In pursuit of this goal we recruit, train and place Reading Coaches in schools, after-school, community and faith-based literacy programs throughout the area.

Consider that:
Only 42% of inner city children read at grade level by the end of third grade, thereby diminishing their chances for later school success. The result is a greater likelihood of delinquent behavior and the potential for dropping out of school.
Almost 85% of children who appear in juvenile court lack basic reading skills.
