CORRECTIONAL INDUSTRIES ASSISTANT DIRECTOR


GENERAL DEFINITION

This is supervisory level work directing a diversified industries program in a large correctional institution. The employee in this class performs the duties of an across the board assistant to the Correctional Industries Director. Overseeing the activities of the industries shops through industrial shop supervisors and assuring adherence to production schedules and compliance with inmate training regulations and guidelines are major aspects of the work. Work is performed under the supervision of the Correctional Industries Director and involves conditions which can only be partially controlled.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Tours the correctional industries plants; observes production operations for such items as clothing, furniture and printed materials; discusses production activities with industries shop supervisors; prepares reports on the pace of production at each industries plant as well as inventories.

Reviews reports of industries shop supervisors; analyzes correctional industries plant production costs; checks cost of labor and raw materials used in each production process; evaluates existing production techniques; recommends modifications for production techniques and equipment; develops new methods for the supervision and training of inmates in each industries plant.

Ensures that industries shop supervisors at each industries plant comply with court orders; participates in the inspection of correctional industries for such compliance; attends executive staff meeting and other meetings as required.

Assists in the preparation of the operating budget of the entire correctional industries program; estimates the cost of labor and raw materials as well as depreciation and minor expenditures.

Assists in the research of potential new correctional industries programs; evaluates capabilities of staff, inmates, and equipment at each industries plant; conducts feasibility studies for new projects as required; provides detailed information on new proposals for production, plant and equipment layout.

Ensures that industries staff is kept current on the latest trends and innovations in the various industry plants within the industry program.

Performs related work as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION
Completion of a bachelor's degree in business administration, education or a related field at an accredited college or university. AND

EXPERIENCE
Two years of supervisory experience in a correctional or equivalent private or public industries program.

OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure in this class.
