WATER METER REPAIR WORKER II
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is semi-skilled work in the disassembly, repair and installation of large and complex water meters. Work is performed under the close supervision of a meter repair group leader. Assignments are stable in nature and are performed in accordance with standard meter shop practices and general instructions. Work assignments may involve some disagreeable aspects and some physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Disassembles large water meters using hand tools; removes non-serviceable parts; replaces broken gears and worn parts; operates pipe-threading machine, power buffer and drill press in repairing parts of meters; performs necessary adjustments and reassembles meters.
- Drives a truck to designated locations; makes on-line repairs to large water meters,
when possible; disconnects non-serviceable meters and replaces with properly operating
units; removes and replaces meters on a rotation basis.
- Tests large and complex water meters for accurate functioning at varying rates of water flow; tests meters for leaks; changes register and post gears to adjust meter for proper operating accuracy; may assign subordinate employees to perform facilitating tasks in the repair and installation of large water meters.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the disassembly repair, and installation of all types of water meters.
SKILL IN:
- the use of standard bench tools commonly used in making general repairs to large and complex water meters and in the use of plumbing tools used in making uncomplicated repairs to all types of water meter equipment in the field.
ABILITY TO:
- perform repairs requiring finger dexterity and hearing and eye coordination.
- test meters for leakage and accurate measurement of water flow.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/76.)
- Education equivalent to the completion of the eighth school grade.
- Two years of experience in work involving the use of plumbing or pipe fitting tools, one year of which shall have been in the repair of water meters.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment if required by work assignments.
