WATER METER SERVICE WORKER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is semi-skilled work in the disassembly, repair and installation of small water meters and performing as a helper on similar work for large water meters.
Work is performed under the close supervision of water meter repair foreman or higher level water meter repairman. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with instructions and established meter shop routines. Work assignments involve some disagreeable aspects and some physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Repairs or replaces non-serviceable water meter chambers and other worn parts; cleans water meter gear trains and other parts in solvent; replaces broken gears and worn parts; greases gear trains; places new parts in proper position and reassembles and seals water meters.
- Tests water meters for accurate functioning at varying rates of water flow; tests meters for leaks; changes register and post gears to adjust meter for proper operating accuracy; caps and seals meters.
- Drives a panel truck to designated locations; makes on-line repairs to water meters; removes meter register and replaces stuffing box gaskets; disconnects non-serviceable water meters and replaces them with proper operating units; inserts connecting washers at the joints and tightens pipe connectors using wrenches.
- May assist higher level repairman engaged in the repair of large water meters.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, materials, tools and practices used in the installation, repair and removal of small water meters.
SKILL IN:
- the use of standard bench tools commonly used in making general repairs to small water meters, and in the use of plumbing tools used in making uncomplicated repairs to all types of water meter equipment in the field.
ABILITY TO:
- perform repairs requiring finger dexterity and hearing and eye coordination.
- test meters for leakage and accurate measurement of water flow.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/76.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
- One year of experience in work involving the use of plumbing or pipe fitting tools.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment if required by work assignment.
