This is skilled mechanical work at the full performance level in the maintenance and repair of a variety of mechanical equipment in a large City facility or several facilities. An employee in this class utilizes mechanical trade skills in the maintenance and repair of machinery and related equipment including, but not limited to generators, motors, pumps, compressors, fans and valves. Work also includes performing other basic trades tasks as assigned such as routine plumbing and electrical work. Employees service equipment breakdowns in environments such as offices, storerooms, basements, roofs, laboratories, laundry, pool, airport and patient care areas.

Significant to the work is inspecting and diagnosing malfunctioning mechanical equipment to determine equipment problems. Work involves some disagreeable aspects and physical effort. Employees report to a higher level maintenance superior.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

• the position must perform skilled mechanical maintenance work on a variety of facility machinery and related equipment components.

• Regularly performs inspection, maintenance, diagnosing and servicing of a variety of mechanical equipment such as, but not limited to, circulation and sump pumps, refrigeration units, auxiliary diesel generators, fans, air filters bearings, universal joints, compressors, pumps, conveyor belts, and similar mechanical equipment; performs preventive and corrective maintenance on machinery including components of dishwashers, ovens, gas ranges, freezers, automatic doors, laundry equipment and steam coolers.
• Lubricates and cleans equipment components, replaces worn parts and adjusts and aligns parts as necessary; disassembles machinery and equipment and inspects component parts for wear or damage; overhauls machinery and equipment where needed; adjusts tension and clearance on conveyors and power drive units; reassembles machinery and equipment assuming proper alignment; determines causes of equipment problems and performs subsequent repair work.
• Dismantles or partially dismantles electric motors; disconnects coupling from motors, removes inspection plates, disconnects pipes and removes suction plates; reassembles unit using hand tools and checks completed work for proper alignment.
• Cuts, threads, and installs copper, terra cotta, concrete or galvanized pipe; installs plumbing fixtures and makes repairs or adjustments to component mechanisms; performs various repair and maintenance work on components of sinks, toilets and urinals.
• Performs other trades tasks as assigned including routine painting, plastering, cement finishing, roofing, electrical and similar work.
• Repairs a variety of fire fighting equipment and brass, steel and copper fixtures from fire apparatus; maintains and operates air system supplying air cylinder.
• Erects scaffolding to provide access to work areas and works from heights; uses block and tackle, slings, hydraulic jacks to support or move machinery.
• Gives general or detailed instructions to semi-skilled or unskilled workers; reviews work in progress and on completion.
• Performs routine welding tasks in connection with regular maintenance mechanic work.
• Prepares routine reports on work projects and estimates of labor, time and materials; prepares and places orders for replacement parts required for repairs from specified vendors.
• Operators and utilizes automated building control systems, such as HVAC and fire and security alarm systems as assigned.
• Identifies possible hazardous materials such as asbestos insulation and P.C.B.'s; informs supervisors of the presence of possible hazardous materials.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• the methods, practices, materials and tools used in the maintenance of machinery and mechanical equipment including, but not limited to generators, motors, pumps, refrigeration units, auxiliary diesel generators, fans, compressors, conveyor belts, and related mechanical equipment.
• the methods, practices, materials and tools used in performing various routine trades tasks, such as basic plumbing and electrical repairs and maintenance.
• the occupational hazards and safety precautions apparent in the repair of machinery and related mechanical equipment.

SKILL IN:

• the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment including but not limited to generators, motors, pumps, and valves.
• the use and care of tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various machinery and mechanical equipment.

EDUCATION:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

  AND

  EXPERIENCE:
  

• Four years of experience maintaining and repairing machinery and mechanical devices or equipment utilizing several mechanical skills.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES

• Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Machinery and Equipment Mechanic if required by work assignment.
• Possession of a grade "B" Refrigeration Engineer's License issued by the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections, prior to appointment and during tenure of employment if required by work assignment.

NOTE: Employees are required to safeguard and account for all tools, equipment and supplies used in the course of their work.
