This is supervisory machinist work planning, assigning, and coordinating the activities of a group of skilled machinists engaged in the design, fabrication, modification, and repair of precision metal parts for machinery and equipment, including large industrial items. Employees in this class are responsible for ensuring the proper and efficient utilization of personnel, equipment and materials in order to provide quality staff machining services. Reviewing subordinate activities for conformance to machining standards and specifications is a significant aspect of the work. Work involves some disagreeable aspects in the form of standing for long periods of time and the lifting of heavy material. Employees report to an administrative or maintenance superior.

ALLOCATING FACTOR: (The following condition must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

• The position must be responsible for supervising a minimum of three skilled, full performance level machinists.

• Receives work requests for the design, fabrication, modification and repair of metal items necessary for the operation of various machinery and equipment; assesses the nature of the work and obtains or prepares specifications indicating such factors as dimensions and tolerance levels for machining assignments; prioritizes work and schedules the most efficient deployment of staff to perform services; assigns work to subordinates in accordance with priorities and work schedules; tours work areas and reviews work in progress and completed to ensure conformance to instructions, standards and specifications; identifies problems in work performed and instructs subordinates on more appropriate machining measures; ensures the safety of the work environment and enforces safety rules and regulations; trains and/or ensures the training of newly hired and inexperienced employees; performs machining work as required.
• Ensures the maintenance of shop machinery, such as lathes, drill presses, milling machines, shapers and similar equipment; supervises the maintenance of shop machinery and the correcting of equipment breakdown; directs subordinates in the maintenance and cleanliness of the shop environment.
• Maintains tools, materials equipment and supplies and records inventory; prepares purchase requisitions; designs specifications for necessary shop equipment; obtains prices from vendors who can supply needed parts; monitors requirements contracts with vendors supplying materials; receives and distributes materials and supplies needed to complete projects; inspects metal stock and tools to ensure inventory maintenance.
• Inspects contracted and custom-made machine parts and accessories and compares to specifications to determine adherence to machining standards and specifications; makes recommendations on contracted vendor work.
• Prepares activity reports on staff maintenance and repair activities; recommends disciplinary action; approves leave and overtime requests; utilizes computer programs to enter and extract data for record keeping purposes.
• Attends and participates in maintenance/skills training programs.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• the methods and procedures used in machining, dismantling, replacing and reassembling metal parts for machinery and equipment, including large industrial items.

EDUCATION

• Completion of the twelfth school grade.

  AND

  GENERAL EXPERIENCE
  

• Four years of experience learning the machinist trade as a helper or apprentice.

  AND

  SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
  

• Two years of experience in the fabrication, modification, and repair of metal parts as a full performance level machinist.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.

NOTE: Training in a post high school approved machinist trade school curriculum for a minimum of six months up to a maximum of one year can be equated on a month by month basis for the general experience requirement.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
