This is full performance level machining work designing, fabricating and modifying precision metal parts for machinery and equipment, including large industrial items, using lathes, drill presses, milling machines, shapers and similar equipment. Employees in this class design metal items, machine metal items, dismantle equipment, replace defective parts and reassemble devices as assigned. Work involves some disagreeable aspects in the form of standing for long periods of time, and the lifting of heavy material. Employees report to a higher level maintenance superior.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following condition must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

• the position must be responsible for utilizing various machinist equipment to modify and fabricate metal parts for machinery.

• Lays out and plans work according to written specifications, verbal instructions and measurements from broken or worn metal pieces; selects tools and equipment necessary to perform work operations and readies metal stock for fabrication, modification or repair; sets up the machines necessary for the job; positions metal stock on machines and performs required operations; uses micrometers and other precision measuring instruments to measure work during various stages and after it is completed to ensure accuracy; finishes, repairs and assembles pieces as required.
• Designs, fabricates and modifies such items as shafts, valve stems, sleeves, bolts, and a wide variety of other machinery and parts and equipment using lathes, drill presses, milling machines, shapers, and similar metal-working power equipment; refaces flywheels with flywheel lathe; re-bores engine cylinder blocks using a portable boring mill, resurfaces cylinder heads and engine blocks; refaces and fits engine valves; replaces valve girders and reworks a variety of other machine and equipment parts; uses taps, dies, reamers, files and other hand tools to finish objects.
• Dismantles equipment such as motors, pumps, engines, compressors and laundry equipment; locates source of poor or inadequate performance and performs corrective repairs; replaces defective parts; assembles and tests equipment.
• Performs work relating to the maintenance and cleanliness of the shop environment; maintains the operation of shop machinery and performs corrective and preventive maintenance on such.
• Advises and instructs other trades personnel in the machinist trade.
• Attends and participates in maintenance/skills training programs.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• the methods and procedures used in machining, dismantling, replacing and reassembling metal parts for machinery and equipment, including large industrial items.
• the practices, tools and materials of the machinist trade.
• the operation of lathes, drill presses, milling machines, shapers and related metal-working equipment.
• the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the machinist trade.
• the working properties of metal, such as steel, cast iron, aluminum and brass.

SKILL IN:

• the use and care of tools, machines and equipment employed in the machinist trade.

ABILITY TO:

• read, interpret and work from sketches, blueprints and models.
• understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• use micrometers and other precision measuring instruments.

EDUCATION:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

  AND

  EXPERIENCE:
  

• Four years of experience learning the machinist trade as a helper or apprentice.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

NOTE: Training in a post high school approved machinist trade school curriculum for a minimum of six months up to a maximum of one year can be equated on a month by month basis for the experience requirement.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
