UTILITY MAINTENANCE APPRENTICE 1
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is training level trades work. Employees in this class participate in a structured City-sponsored Water Department’s utility apprenticeship program, developing knowledge and skills necessary for advancement to the next level in the series. Employees perform rudimentary maintenance and repair work under the guidance of a higher level trades worker. Assignments expand in complexity as employee's apprenticeship progresses. Satisfactory completion of academic programs and achievement of required minimum proficiencies at designated intervals in the apprenticeship program are required in order to progress to the next level in the series. Work includes some disagreeable aspects and requires physical exertion. Work is performed under the direction of a technical superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- Positions in this class must participate in a structured City-sponsored Water Department’s utility apprenticeship program, developing knowledge and skills necessary for advancement to the next level in the series.
- Positions must perform rudimentary maintenance and repair work under the guidance of a higher level trades worker.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Assists full performance level trades workers in performing routine maintenance projects such as but not limited to assembling, adjusting, installing, inspecting, testing, troubleshooting and repairing system components and equipment.
Learns protocols, standards and methods applicable to system operation/maintenance; develops competency in a specialty area such as electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and HVAC.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
SKILL IN:
- the care and use of the tools and equipment used in the area of trade specialization
- mathematics up to first year algebra.
ABILITY TO:
- Read and write English
- Learn the materials and tools used in the area of trades specialization
- Learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in a specialty trades area of trade
- communicate effectively with associates, both orally and in writing
- understand and follow oral and written instructions
- perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude
- read and interpret blueprints and plans
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 05/07.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE
- Successful completion of a pre-apprenticeship trades program sponsored by the Philadelphia Water Department.
OR
- Possession of a certificate documenting successful completion of a one year diploma from an accredited trades school in the field of instrumentation, electrical, HVAC mechanical or mechanical trades.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania six months after appointment as a Utility Maintenance Apprentice 1, if required by work assignment
