BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is responsible supervisory and technical work directing a city-wide bridge maintenance and repair
program. Directing the activities of a large number of journeymen level tradesmen and other workers through subordinate supervisors is a significant aspect of the work.
Work is performed under the direction of a technical superior. Assignments require evaluative thinking and work is performed in accordance with well defined policies of accepted bridge maintenance standards. The employee in this class has the controlling responsibility for the bridge maintenance and repair programs carried out by city forces. Work involves conditions which may be occasionally hazardous.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Receives work orders requesting a wide range of bridge maintenance repair activities, such as replacement and repair of structural members, pouring of concrete or painting of related bridge structures; reads and interprets blueprints and sketches of bridges and structures to be repaired or altered.
- Visits proposed work sites either alone or with trades foreman; estimates the nature and extent of work, the material and supply needs and the size and composition of the crew required; determines if unusually hazardous conditions exist; takes steps to minimize hazardous conditions such as arranging to have power lines neutralized and the detouring of traffic around work sites.
- Inspects construction work, fabricated materials, such as angle iron, tie rods and cement forms, and the painting of equipment, bridges and related structures.
- Visits work sites to observe work both in progress and completed for adherence; inspects crew activities at job sites to insure that work is being performed in accordance with safety regulations and standards; resolves or recommends the solution of work problems.
- Reviews requests for materials and supplies and approves or disapproves them based on the facts at hand; confers with manufacturers, distributors and suppliers on the availability and cost of materials, tools and equipment.
- Makes inspections of and investigates complaints concerning the maintenance and repair needs of bridges and related structures; determines whether repairs are needed.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, practices, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of bridges and related structures.
- structural details and structural materials commonly used in bridge construction.
- the occupational hazards and standard safety precautions of bridge maintenance work.
- supervisory methods and techniques.
ABILITY TO:
- supervise, through subordinates, the work of a large group of skilled tradesmen, semi-skilled helpers and laborers engaged in bridge maintenance and repair work.
- make estimates of time and materials and to prepare reports.
- climb and work at considerable heights on bridge structures under hazardous conditions.
- work from and interpret technical diagrams and blueprints.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/68.)
EDUCATION:
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
- Four years of experience in bridge maintenance, inspection or construction work.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
- Two years of supervising bridge maintenance, inspection or construction activities.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of appointment as a Bridge Maintenance Superintendent.
