This is bridge maintenance work at the advanced level performing major bridge rehabilitation/maintenance and building repair on the City's bridge system. An employee in this class demonstrates skills, as required, and assists in the training of trainee level bridge maintenance employees. This class is differentiated from lower level classes in the series by the complexity of assignments and concentration on advanced electrical, mechanical or welding related maintenance projects. The maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical systems on moveable bridges are significant aspects of the work.

Work involves conditions which can be only partially controlled including but not limited to working at unusual and dangerous heights; working in close proximity to high voltage lines; working in inclement conditions; and, performing work requiring strenuous physical effort. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Bridge Maintenance Supervisor.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

• A position in this class is responsible for demonstrating bridge maintenance trades skills as required, assisting in the training of trainee level bridge maintenance employees in the Streets Department's Bridge Maintenance Division.
• A position in this class performs the more complex assignments with concentration on advanced electrical, mechanical, or welding related maintenance projects.
• A position in this class must be responsible for the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical systems on moveable bridges.

• Inspects, maintains, alters and repairs a variety of large complex mechanical equipment including reduction gears, drive shafts, bearings, locks, cam assemblies, motors, pumps and valves, compressors, circulators, emergency and motor brakes, limit switches, buffers and traffic gates.
• Inspects, maintains, alters, and repairs complex high voltage electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures; inspects switch gears, transformers, relays, motors, and electrical control equipment for proper functioning, using ampmeters, voltmeters, megger and other testing devices; locates malfunctioning or inoperable components; lays out, assembles, installs, and tests electrical apparatus and wiring for power and lighting; connects wiring to switches, controls and circuit breakers; inspects a variety of electrical appliances, such as heaters, fans, circulator pumps for proper efficiency.
• Welds various types of metals, such as steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum, utilizing shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, brazing and submerged arc welding procedures.
• Constructs forms and sets them in preparation for pouring concrete; pours and finishes concrete in the construction and repair of bridges, roadways, sidewalks, curbs, foundations and retaining walls.
• Cuts, patches, points, dresses and sets marble, granite, and limestone used in rebuilding and repairing retaining walls, bridges and pier; lays brick, terra cotta, cinder and other block in construction of same.
• Cuts, welds, fabricates, repairs or replaces defective structural members of bridges and buildings such as girders, angles, channels and plates; repairs or replaces functional bridge elements, such as expansion dams, drainage systems and safety features; fabricates, sets and ties reinforcing bars.
• Sets up hoisting equipment, maneuvers iron, steel and wooden members in place using block and tackle or various types of hydraulic jacks; bolts and welds structural members to form a completed structure or framework of a structure; moves heavy bulking equipment, such as trailers and machinery when the use of rigging is required; fastens base plates and lays steel grating on bridge deck; erects, works from and dismantles scaffolding; repairs or replaces steel or aluminum guide rail, cable guard rail, chain link fence, hand rail and impact attenuator.
• Lays out and builds complex stairs, platforms, fences, railings, partitions, barricades of wooden material; performs interior and exterior building renovations such as, installing drywall, insulation, paneling, drop ceilings, window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware such as locks; constructs office furniture including laminated plastic; assembles, cuts and shapes materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel-pins or glue.
• Prepares special bridge or building surfaces for painting by wirebrushing, solvent cleaning, chiseling, chipping and grit blasting, depending on the condition of the surface to be painted; applies paint to bridge members with paint brush, rollers or spray guns; may apply paint to traffic islands, interior and exterior of buildings using brushing, rollers and spray guns; prepares surfaces to be painted; removes old paint by use of burners, sandpaper, scrapers and grit blasters.
• Sets and maintains "Work Zone Traffic Control" devices in accordance with established State and Federal requirements and ensures public safety.
• Cuts complex openings in walls for pipes; bends, cuts, reams and threads pipes; installs, maintains and repairs sanitary fixtures such as valves, faucets, flushometers, traps, sewers and vents; installs and secures fixture supports, hangers and foundations; open clogged drains with various devices.
• Lubricates, disconnects, disassembles, cleans and replaces worn parts of a variety of complex mechanical equipment such as, reduction and large gears, drive shafts, bearings, locks, cam assemble, motors, pumps and valves, compressors, circulators, emergency and motor brakes, limit switches, buffers and traffic gates.
• Provides trainee level employees technical support skills demonstration and training assistance when in the field and in formal training setting, as required.
• Operates the following types of tools and equipment: pneumatic chipping and scaling hammers, drilling machines, and various basic machine shop tools; electric welders, oxygen and acetylene torches, trowels, joiners, floats, power saws, and drills, vibrators, compactors, chisels, hammers and shaping tools, malls and crow bars, squares, levels, post hole diggers, plainer, router, brushes, rollers and high pressure airless spray guns, gritblasters, and gunite and pipe threading machines; power drain equipment; and various other small hand tools related to construction trades.
• Performs related work as required.

• Education equivalent to completion of the tenth school grade.

• Two years of experience as a Bridge Maintenance Worker I

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

• Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Bridge Maintenance Worker II, if required by work assignments.
