RECREATION FACILITIES CARETAKER 2

This is supervisory work in the cleaning and care of recreation department facilities and surrounding grounds and includes maintaining facility cleanliness, performing grounds maintenance, minor repair work and assisting skilled trades workers in the performance of minor work orders. This class is distinguished from lower level classes in that employees work at a major recreation facility and/or have responsibility for lower level caretakers, or serve as the lead worker in a crew performing grounds maintenance work at various recreation parks and squares. Employees regularly use mechanized tools and operate power equipment and may drive and operate single chassis automotive equipment. Work includes minor repair and maintenance of equipment such as mowers, leaf blowers and mulchers. Employees in this class may perform shift work.

Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher level supervisor.

Assignments include the cleaning and care of an assigned recreation center and surrounding grounds and acting as a supervisor of lower level caretakers who may be assigned to assist at a center and are carried out in accordance with detailed work instructions. Work involves some disagreeable aspects and requires moderate physical effort.

Works primarily as a lead worker in a roving crew maintaining various recreation facilities and grounds or in the larger recreation centers (A facilities) to perform facility and grounds maintenance functions and /or supervise the work of lower level caretakers

Performs the following duties when assigned:

1. GENERAL
• Sweeps, mops and scrubs floors; waxes and polishes floors; washes windows; dusts furniture and woodwork; empties trash receptacles; secures loose flooring, ceiling tiles and paneling; secures partitions and shelves; replaces shelves; repairs holes in panels or partitions; keeps building free of safety hazards.
• Tightens door locks; repairs doors by tightening hinges or nailing wood over holes in doors or windows; replaces door locks; tightens bolts on bleachers and benches; secures seats and foot plates; replaces bleacher seats and footplates; assembles bleachers.
• Checks thermostat to assure proper temperature is being maintained; repairs sport and play equipment by tightening nuts and bolts, wiring cross braces, bending basketball rims into proper position; replaces and repairs play equipment; cleans debris from gutters and downspouts on one-story buildings.
2. ELECTRICAL
• Replaces light bulbs, switch plates, cover plates and lens covers; tapes exposed wires; resets circuit breakers and replaces fuses; repairs electrical appliances by replacing plugs or cords on cleaning appliances.
3. PLUMBING AND HEATING
• Unclogs sinks by removing debris; unclogs toilets and urinals by removing debris and plunging; turns off water supply to leaking or running fixtures; replaces washers and seats in valves and faucets; replaces toilet tank flush assemblies; tightens fittings to stop leaks; replaces lavatory supplies; lights pilot in gas hot water heaters; cleans debris from water fountains and catch basins; winterizes drinking fountains.
4. PAINTING
• Washes walls and woodwork; scrapes loose and peeling paint and plaster; removes protruding nails and screws; removes obstacles from areas to be painted.
• Spackles walls and ceiling and replaces glazing around windows.
5. OUTDOOR
• Performs turf and grounds maintenance work such as mowing, trimming, seeding and mulching; operates a variety of power equipment and tools such as mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, mulchers and walk behind snow blowers; may drive and operate single chassis dump trucks hauling dirt, infield mix, lime, chlorine, compost and other bulk materials and carrying salt and attaches plow for removing snow and salting roads, parking lots, driveways and pavement: operates riding equipment such as tractor, mower and other equipment and commonly towed attachments.
• Sweeps and cleans all walks from curbline in; keeps playground areas free of debris and safety hazards; lubricates and adjusts power tools and equipment according to preventative maintenance schedule; removes, sharpens, balances and replaces mower blades as necessary; trims and cuts grass and hedges; clears fields of brush and woods of undergrowth; removes vines and prunes trees; applies compost and cultivates fields and gardens; applies pesticides.
• Picks up litter and refuse from grounds; walks next to moving trucks and lifts and dumps refuse containers; moves heavy containers or equipment and large bulky objects.
• Assists in removing and/or cutting down dangerous and unsafe trees that results from unexpected and dangerous weather or other emergency conditions; responds to emergency situations or around recreation centers.
• Removes graffiti from the surfaces of recreation buildings, facilities and outside play equipment.
• Marks play areas; lines field; fills holes in low areas; converts ball fields.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• the materials, methods and practices used in cleaning and maintenance of recreation facilities and grounds
• the operation and use of janitorial equipment necessary to complete work assignments
• the occupational hazards and safety precautions used in cleaning work
SKILL IN:
• the use of simple hand tools
ABILITY TO:
• assign and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in cleaning and maintenance operations
• make minor repairs to buildings and equipment
• operate power mowing and trimming equipment
• perform minor preventive maintenance on cleaning equipment
• assist skilled tradesmen in performing minor repairs
• use power snow removal equipment
• read and understand instructions on janitorial supply containers
• request supplies necessary for work performance
• understand and follow oral and written instructions

EDUCATION
• Equivalent to the eighth school grade
  and
  Completion of 40 hours training in the maintenance and care of recreation facilities and grounds.
AND
EXPERIENCE
• Two years of experience in the cleaning and care of facilities and grounds at a recreation facility.

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
