LAUNDRY WORKER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is machine operation and manual work at the lead worker level in the performance of routine tasks in an institutional laundry.
Work is performed under the close supervision of a laundry supervisor. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with instructions and established routines. Work involves some disagreeable aspects and light physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Checks work load of employees operating steam press or flatwork ironing units, or washing machines; reassigns press or iron operators as necessary; operates flatwork ironers; checks completed work for cleanliness and neatness; records and keeps a record of the number of uniforms pressed.
- Folds dried clothing by hand; takes folded clothing to proper sorting area.
- Sorts soiled clothing by hand; oversees employees engaged in sorting.
- May keep simple records of laundry operations.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the operation of laundry machines including washers, tumblers, steam presses, and flatwork ironers.
- safety precautions necessary in laundry operations.
ABILITY TO:
- keep simple records of laundry operations.
- assign and check the work of others, and to instruct and train new employees.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
- work in a standing position under conditions of high temperature and humidity.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 1/1953.)
- Education equivalent to the completion of the eighth school grade.
- One year of experience performing laundry work in a commercial or institutional laundry which has included the operation of laundry machines such as washers, tumblers and flatwork ironers.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.
