This is routine work in a City department performing, on an assigned shift, any of a variety of facilitating tasks essential to the care of patients, infirm individuals or infants, or the preparation and service of food, or the performance of non-technical duties in a laboratory, or the custodial care of buildings and grounds, or the operation of a variety of laundry machinery and equipment, or the protection of buildings, materials and equipment against fire, trespass and theft. Work is performed under the supervision of an operations or a maintenance supervisor and involves physical effort and some disagreeable conditions.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

• Position must, on assigned shift, perform any of a variety of facilitating tasks of a routine repetitive nature related to areas such as food service, custodial services, laundry operations, non-technical laboratory services or security services.

• Prepares a variety of menu items such as cereal, beverages and salads; scrapes and dices vegetables, bread, fish and meats; sets tables; washes dishes, pots and pans; cleans kitchen area and equipment.
• Serves food trays to patients; feeds patients who cannot feed themselves; bathes patients and gives them urinal service; transports patients on stretchers; attends to the personal needs of the aged, infirm or infants; takes and records temperature, pulse and respiration; transports or picks up equipment and specimen to and from hospital and department.
• Assists in laboratory operation duties; prepares a variety of solutions and materials for testing; collects and distributes specimens for testing; mixes, weighs or measures solutions and materials; assists in dissecting animals such as cats and dogs received for rabies testing; cleans laboratory equipment after experiment; washes glass, plastic containers and other laboratory glassware such as BOD-bottles, beakers and flasks used in collecting wastewater or biosolids.
• Counts and sorts incoming laundry; checks attached laundry slips; notes discrepancies; washes, presses and folds laundry by operating washing machines, extractors, dryers, flatwork ironers and folding machines; presses garments with a steam press unit or hand iron.
• Guards buildings, and materials and equipment against vandalism, theft, fire or any hazard; turns lights off or on; opens, closes, locks or unlocks doors and windows; operates traffic gates, directing traffic or authorized visitors to appropriate destinations; answers telephone; takes messages; may assist in locating materials and equipment; checks on material and equipment supply; receives and dispenses automotive fuels and oils; delivers supplies; keeps unauthorized vehicles or persons away from building; notifies Police or Fire Department in event of emergency; writes simple reports.
• Cleans offices, restrooms and other areas; sweeps and mops floors; polishes furniture; cuts grass; shovels snow; removes trash; may replace light bulbs; may make minor repairs to equipment; moves furniture and equipment.
• Performs related work as required.

NOTE: Completion of the tenth school grade for this class may be desirable for positions in Health, Police, and Water Department.
