This is skilled heavy duty vehicle operations work, operating large tractor trailer automotive equipment to transport solid waste material. Employees in this class load and unload materials and transport materials to designated sites. Work is distinguished from lower-level equipment operations classes by complexity of operator functions performed, which require a substantial degree of coordination. Responsibility for first echelon maintenance and for the safe and efficient operation of automotive equipment are important aspects of the work. Work involves light physical effort and some disagreeable working conditions.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)Performs pre-trip inspection of vehicle by checking oil, water, tires, lights, mirrors and other items affecting these operations; washes and services vehicle with water, gas and oil; performs first echelon maintenance and makes minor repairs.
Backs trailer into station for loading of solid waste; checks position of vehicle and ram blade inside trailer to insure proper loading; transports up to 80,000 pounds of waste material to designated landfill sites; unloads material by releasing brakes; and operating the ram blade throttle in the trailer to eject material; after unloading restores blade to original position and checks condition of trailer.
Performs coupling and uncoupling of trailer; lowers trailer jacks; disconnects air and electrical lines; releases fifth wheel lock and pulls tractor ahead to uncouple; performs reverse operations for coupling.
Keeps trip record or log; reports defects in the vehicle operating, accidents, traffic violations or damage to the vehicle.
Performs related work as required.
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATESPossession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to the scheduled examination and during tenure of employment in the class.
