GENERAL DEFINITION
This is security work transporting prisoners from institutions to courts and maintaining custody of prisoners during court sessions. Positions in this class may also serve in a training capacity learning the methods and techniques and developing the abilities necessary to perform court order enforcement work such as serving legal documents and executing a wide variety of civil and criminal court orders. This work involves regular exposure to unpredictable conditions and physical effort is frequently required. Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher level deputy sheriff.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Bilingual Specialty
Performs the duties below with English language speaking and designated non-English
language speaking populations.
Operates prisoner vans, buses and station wagons to pick up prisoners at various
institutions and transport them to court locations for scheduled appearance; participates in
unloading of prisoners at court locations; escorts prisoners to cell areas; places prisoners in cells
pending their appearance in court; maintains order in cell and courtrooms. Escorts prisoners and transports records relating to prisoner cases to and from
courtrooms; guards prisoners throughout court sessions; returns court disposition documents to
cell rooms. Searches all prisoners coming from institutions other than those of the prisons division. Admits visitors to cell areas upon presentation of authorization papers. At the direction of the court, makes arrest of persons charged in non-support cases. Attends classes and participates in field training programs to learn the methods and
techniques of field investigations, legal requirements for serving and enforcing court orders, and
the forms and procedures applicable to the service of legal instruments. Performs related work as required. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
ABILITY TO:
Both Specialties
Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to understand and speak fluently and
clearly in English and a designated non-English language.
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Deputy Sheriff Officer.
