INMATE COMPUTER BASED EDUCATION SUPERVISOR

This is supervisory instructional work directing an inmate computer based education program. The employee in this class, in addition to instructing inmates participating in the program at one of the program worksites, monitors and coordinates the overall program. Work includes reviewing and determining appropriate changes to be made in the program, and supervising the activities of other instructors. Contact with other instructors, inmates participating in the program, and contracted agencies involved with the maintenance of the system is significant to the work. Work is performed under the direction of an administrative superior and involves conditions which can only be partially controlled.

• The position must supervise instructional personnel in a computer based education program.
• The position must instruct inmates at one of the program worksites, and monitor and coordinate the overall program.

• Supervises instructors in a program designed to provide computer based education to inmates; insures that subordinates adhere to program standards and procedures; consults with instructors on individual inmate progress and problems; trains and orients new instructors.
• Monitors and coordinates computer based education program operations; visits each program worksite to ensure efficient operation of the system; meets with other instructors and contracted agency personnel involved with the maintenance of the computerized system to identify and resolve hardware and software problems; installs hardware and software when vendors are unavailable; makes minor repairs to computerized equipment; ensures adequate recruitment and participation of inmates in the program.
• Reviews and determines appropriate changes to be made in the program, including acquisition of new software; assists Inmate Computer Based Education Instructors in learning to use all newly created lesson plans developed for inmates with learning disabilities; identifies learning disabilities of inmates and assists instructors in facilitating the learning process; meets with other instructors to discuss inmate population needs/problems; recommends changes to be made in the program to superiors.
• Instructs inmates participating in the program; determines inmate educational level to function or participate in the program; develops and administers tests in individual curriculums in computer courses, basic reading, writing and mathematics skills, English as a second language, typing skills, substance abuse and life skills programs, and pre-GED tests; evaluates inmate performance and determines placement in appropriate curriculum; provides inmates with coursework instruction and computer access procedure; explains course curriculum; schedules inmate for available study position; demonstrates the use and application of computer equipment and software; advises inmate on classroom behavior; controls inmate time on task/number of learning attempts; reads and analyzes course material for inmate; creates inmate's learning path; provides educational counseling on a one-to-one basis as needed; prepares supplemental material needed to address inmate educational deficiency.
• Prepares and maintains the overall program records and a variety of reports such as monthly progress reports, inmate adjustment summaries, and subordinates' attendance and performance reports; approves sick leave and vacation requests.
• Works cooperatively with other prison services to provide computer program services to support inmate needs.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

ABILITY TO:
• supervise lower level instructional personnel in a computer based education program
• develop and conduct tests in individualized program curriculums, to determine inmate educational level to function or participate in the program and recommend appropriate course curriculum
• explain each course curriculum or program and create inmate's learning path
• demonstrate the use and application of computer equipment and software
• monitor and control inmate activities
• analyze course material and provide one-to-one educational counseling on an as needed basis
• prepare supplemental course material needed to address inmate educational deficiency
• perform minor repairs on computer equipment
• install hardware and software
• evaluate program curriculums and recommend changes to superiors
• monitor and coordinate the overall program and prepare and maintain a variety of program records and reports, using non-procedural program languages
• communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, prison officials and associates

EDUCATION
• Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
• Two years of educational counseling or teaching experience.
OR

Two years of correctional experience involving frequent personal interaction with inmates.

OR

Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience indicated above and a bachelor's degree as the educational minimum.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
