This is drug prevention work assisting neighborhood groups or City employees to identify and resolve substance abuse problems. An employee in this class is responsible for the development and implementation of programs designed to alleviate drug and alcohol abuse and for overseeing the coordination of anti-drug efforts among affected constituencies. Organizing, motivating, and educating individuals and groups about drug related issues are significant aspects of the work.
Work is performed under the general direction of an administrative superior.
Employee Services
- Meets and counsels non-uniformed employees with substance abuse problems; refers employees to detoxification and rehabilitation programs; develops programs to combat drug use; serves as resource for employee referrals for other City departments; provides guidance to employees about treatment options.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the objectives and practices of substance abuse prevention or treatment programs
- the methods of determining the scope of needs and problems inherent in the area of drug abuse
- the methods and techniques of disseminating educational information to the public for the Community Services specialty
- the resources available to assist in the elimination of drug abuse related problems
- the underlying reasons and appropriate remedies for drug and alcohol abuse
ABILITY TO:
- organize individuals into neighborhood groups and direct their efforts in overcoming drug abuse related problems for the Community Services specialty
- plan, develop and conduct seminars and workshops on issues related to drug abuse prevention
- establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, representatives of public and private agencies, and unions or community groups
- present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
- empathize and determine appropriate treatment options for affected persons for the Employee Services specialty
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 05/04.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCEBoth Specialties
- One year of experience working in a drug abuse prevention or treatment program.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCECommunity Services
- One year of experience in community organization and education activities in the area of substance abuse.
Employee Services
- One year of experience providing counseling and referral services to employees with substance abuse problems.
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department, which has included completion of a bachelor's degree as an educational minimum.
Note:
Certification as a Registered Addiction Specialist may be substituted for the bachelor's degree for the Employee Services specialty for the first holding following revision of the class specification.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
