Both Specialties
- Conducts client interviews in order to uncover the type and extent of substance abuse; determines
the type of treatment needed; selects placement based on client's needs and court ordered mandates; acts
as a liaison between the client and the probation department.
- Sets up safe driving classes for DUI offenders and contacts clients informing them of class
schedule; maintains contact with the school ensuring that clients are in attendance; contacts clients who
fail to appear for treatment in an effort to insure their return; notifies probation department of client
non-attendance via periodic reports.
- Makes site visits to treatment facilities; becomes familiar with the type of services delivered;
provides information to agency personnel regarding the City's placement program.
- Arranges for the administration of a tuberculin skin (PPD) test; reads PPD results within 48 to
72 hours of administration; reports results to appropriate officials and assists in arranging follow-up
testing and treatment as required.
- Conducts home visits to tuberculosis patients and patients requiring therapy or preventive therapy
to observe patient taking anti-tuberculosis medication or makes appointments for patients to receive
medication at direct observe therapy (DOT) centers; observes reactions to treatment; communicates
observations to clinicians in program; facilitates laboratory monitoring of the communicable disease by
collecting sputum specimens and delivering to laboratory for testing; prepares reports on case activities.
- Maintains information regarding the status and location of each client using a management
information system; prepares periodic statistical reports of program activity; completes change of status
reports when appropriate; monitors re-arrest records of clients.
- Provides limited counseling service to clients, making referrals when appropriate; provides
information and direction to clients in obtaining medical or special financial assistance.
- Appears at judicial hearings; answers any questions posed regarding the program; may describe
acts of non-compliance performed by client.
- Performs related work as required.

- learn the criminal justice system at it applies to the processing of persons arrested for crimes
related to substance abuse.
- learn the methods of communicable disease transmission.
- administer and interpret tuberculin skin tests.
- provide DOT or DOPT at home or any site where patient service can be maintained.
- prepare periodic reports.
- speak, read and write in a specified non-English language and in English fluently for the
Bilingual specialty.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Two years of public contact or community health work experience in a substance abuse or
infectious disease control program which has included, as an aspect of the work, advising or
interviewing clients.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the
Personnel Department.
Additional Requirement for the Bilingual Specialty
- Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to understand and speak fluently and clearly in
English and a designated non-English language.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
