SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAM SUPPORT WORKER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is social service and community program support work assisting in the management of
juvenile delinquent court cases and/or funded programs intended to alleviate child abuse, crime and
dependency between and among youths and adults in the community. An employees in this class
performs a variety of facilitating social service tasks in support of juvenile justice cases or funded
community programs. Work includes contact with court and community program support officials, and
agencies or persons involved in the juvenile justice system. Work is performed under the supervision
of an administrative superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- Position must perform facilitating tasks in the management of juvenile delinquent court cases
and/or funded programs intended to alleviate child abuse, crime and dependency between and
among youths and adults in the community.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Assists in the management of juvenile delinquent court cases; reviews court documents and
service plans of youth recommended for placement; obtains missing information; prepares transmittal
sheet detailing offenses committed by youth, date scheduled for court hearing and whereabouts of youth;
prepares state financial support and agency reimbursement forms; monitors and prepares status report of
youths; prepares court notices to agencies or persons involved in juvenile delinquent cases; advises on
juvenile delinquent case listings and dispositions; maintains case history file of delinquent youth.
- Assists in the management of funded social service programs; reviews applications submitted by
agencies or persons for funding and/or eligibility for federal-and state-subsidized programs/services such
as, but not limited to, child care, housing, adoption and training; insures that applications meet program
guidelines; contacts agencies or persons to elicit information; visits program site to evaluate feasibility
for funding; rejects or approves applications for program funding.
- Provides agencies or persons with program guidelines and/or technical direction; meets with
agencies or persons to discuss and correct application problems; informs agencies or persons about
existing funded programs; makes recommendations and referrals as necessary.
- May coordinate volunteer service programs and solicit for donations of clothing, house
furnishings and foodstuffs, from interested persons or groups; prepares statistical report of donated items
received; arranges for the storage and distribution of donated items.
- May accompany youth to and from court hearings, hospital and clinic appointments, and family
visits, and provide needed counseling and instructional hygiene as necessary.
- Monitors agencies or persons funded to assure compliance to program standards; visits program
sites to ensure programs operation; prepares narrative reports pertaining to program strengths and
weaknesses; assists in verifying fiscal accountability of agency or person's use of grant funds.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- court and community functions, and resources of public and private social services as they relate
to child care, and custody of youth.
- the principles, practices, and techniques of working with individuals with severe emotional,
mental and social problems.
ABILITY TO:
- perform a variety of tasks in support of juvenile delinquent court cases or funded programs
intended to alleviate child abuse, crime and dependency between and among youths and adults.
- review court documents, and applications for funding or eligibility for funded program, and reject
or approve based on program guidelines.
- monitor agencies or persons funded to assure compliance to program standards.
- prepare narrative reports.
- provide technical direction in relation to application for funding or eligibility for funded program.
- solicit for donations from interested persons or groups for youth.
- accompany youth to special visits and provide needed counseling and instruction hygiene as
necessary.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with court and community program support
officials, and agencies or persons involved in care and custody of youth.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.
Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience
requirements as approved on 5/93.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Two years of experience providing social direction to youth or adult as part of a social service
program.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the
Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
