This is engineering technician work of moderate scope and complexity applying established engineering principles, practices, and mathematical knowledge to the completion of assigned projects, in support of engineering in area of specialization. Work includes completing design assignments or a portion of a large design project, writing standardized specifications for contract inclusion, rendering plans and drawings, and reviewing working plans and drawings for use by contractors and engineering project managers. Employees in this class use computer aided drafting and design software (CADD), when required, in the rendering of plans, drawings, plates, and schematics. This class is differentiated from all other technical support classes by the emphasis upon the application of the principles and theories of engineering and higher level mathematics at a level appropriate to assigned engineering tasks. Work is performed under the direction of a technical supervisor.
MECHANICAL SPECIALTY
- Performs the above duties as required in support of mechanical engineering; work may include projects related to the mechanical elements and systems required in plants or other public buildings and structures.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the basic theories, practices and techniques of engineering or architectural technology appropriate to the job assignment
- engineering mathematics as required by assignment in area of specialization
- the principles, practices, terminology, technical symbols, equipment, and instruments of drafting as required in area of specialization
SKILL IN:
- utilizing computer-aided drafting and design software and manual drafting in rendering of such documents as structural plans, drawings and schematics
- applying engineering mathematics and various tools and equipment as required in area of specialization
ABILITY TO:
- prepare, read, and interpret technical plans, layouts, charts, diagrams, schematics, maps, specifications, estimates, and field inspection reports appropriate to the job assignment
- learn the application of computing software packages related to assigned tasks
- draft plans and drawings as prescribed by engineers
- gather and compile information and produce comprehensive reports
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, and professional personnel
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/06.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of the twelfth school grade and one year of post high school training (30 credits) at an accredited technical institute or college, or completion of the City of Philadelphia’s Construction Technology Program for Public Works Employees, with major coursework in an acceptable area of engineering, or engineering, construction or architectural technology, as an educational minimum.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Three years of experience of engineering aide experience at the full performance level in the area of specialization performing engineering support tasks.
OR
One year of engineering aide experience at the advanced level in the area of specialization performing engineering support tasks.
City classes which meet the specific experience requirements are Engineering Aide 2 (full-performance level) and Engineering Aide 3 (advanced-performance level).
NOTE
An Associate's degree in engineering technology from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the education and experience requirement listed above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to and during tenure of employment in this class, if required by work assignment.
