3B81 This is supervisory engineering work assisting in directing the activities of a squad of design engineers engaged in engineering projects in the area of specialization. An employee in this class may also function as a squad leader over a small group of engineers and engineering assistants engaged in the completion of less comprehensive engineering projects.

Work is performed under the direction of an engineering superior. Assignments require analytical thinking and are performed in accordance with accepted engineering standards and applicable regulations. Employees in this class participate with engineers, associates and others to assure that all assignments are completed properly and within the required time limits.

All Specialties

• Serves as assistant squad leader for a group of engineers engaged in the investigation, preliminary planning, design and preparation of specifications, cost and material estimates, technical reports and contract documents for the major phases of large scale engineering projects; delegates to subordinates design features, detailing drafting, and estimates; reviews and evaluates designs, drawings and specifications to determine compliance with engineering practices and departmental regulations and standards; makes recommendations for revisions; describes methods for, and participates in the preparation of a variety of charts, graphs, reports and technical correspondence necessary for the completion of assigned projects; makes computations required for the solution of complex design problems.
• Directs preparation of drawings, plans and designs for the more complex engineering projects; writes the more difficult specifications; makes estimates of payments to contractors; reviews contractors shop drawings for correctness and conformity with plans, specifications and designs; makes field inspections required for the completion of design projects.
• Reviews designs and specifications prepared by consulting engineers for accuracy, completeness and engineering feasibility; advises consultants of required changes.
• May perform the duties described above as the squad leader for a smaller squad of engineers and engineering assistants performing less comprehensive engineering assignments.
• Performs related work as required.

Bridges

• Bridges, retaining walls, culverts and related structures including all structural bridge elements such as superstructures, substructures, and structural appurtenances and other structural work as required.

  General Projects
  

• Water and sewage facilities and special studies, water pumping stations, sections of water distribution system, recreation, airport and park facilities and structures.

  Highways
  

• Road and highway section and related features.

  Hydraulic
  

• Water distribution lines, stormwater, sanitary and intercepting sewers and appurtenances.

  Structural
  

• The structural inspection of existing structures and the review and coordination of structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical details.

Electrical Specialty

• Traffic control devices and traffic analysis studies; the electrical phases of power, heating and lighting systems, subway signal and interlocking systems, pumping stations and other electrical phases of public works projects.

Mechanical Specialty

General Mechanical

• Plumbing, heating and ventilating systems, incinerators, pumping equipment, water gates, valves and other appurtenances for water works facilities, and other phases of public works projects.

  Solid Waste
  

• Refuse collection, street cleaning methods, equipment, and sanitation practices as required; refuse disposal facilities and methods which include municipal incineration, air pollution control equipment, grinding, compaction, composting, sanitary landfill, including operation and maintenance of these systems for present and future installations.
