TRAFFIC DISTRICT ENGINEER


GENERAL DEFINITION

This is specialized civil engineering work, analyzing and maintaining traffic patterns and operations for an assigned district. Employees in this class are responsible for overseeing the collection, analysis and validation of a wide range of traffic engineering data, remedying existing and potential traffic flow problems and providing direction to design engineers on traffic engineering projects. Work includes reviewing construction plans and specifications, performing engineering calculations and assessing field conditions to determine the need for modifications. Reviewing the work of lower-level technical employees and private contractors for adherence to standards used in maintaining and repairing streets, traffic signals and signs is a significant aspect of the work. Work is performed under the direction of a higher level Traffic Engineer.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

  1. Positions must be located in the Streets Department.
  2. Only one position will be allocated to each traffic district.
  3. Employees must be responsible for an assigned district's traffic operation and safety program.
