CIVIL ENGINEER 2


GENERAL DEFINITION

This is civil engineering work at the full performance level performing a variety of difficult engineering assignments with emphasis placed upon the application of broad knowledge of engineering mathematics, principles and practices in all phases of minor or specific phases of major engineering projects. Employees may serve as project leaders on specific assignments.

Employees in this class work with engineers, contractors and others to complete assigned engineering projects. Work is performed under the general supervision of an engineering superior.

Conducts field and office studies to acquire information for, and prepares detailed drawings, plans and designs for the construction, alternation and maintenance of public works, structures and installations; investigates the engineering feasibility and cost of proposed projects; prepares estimates of the cost and quantity of materials and equipment as well as labor costs; prepares specifications and contract documents; makes engineering calculations necessary to complete designs, specifications, cost and materials estimates and other engineering features; determines the most practical, economic and feasible materials required to complete specific projects.

Inspects construction, alteration or maintenance projects for conformance to plans and specifications as part of the completion of design projects; interprets plans and specifications to the contractor; gathers data for the preparation of cost estimates; computes work progress for partial payments to contractors; confers with design engineers on design changes to resolve field problems; recommends major design changes to supervisor.

Reviews plans and specifications prepared by consulting architects and engineers to determine accuracy and completeness of plans, and for compliance with sound engineering practices; confers with architects and engineers in explaining and interpreting design, and contract requirements; reviews and recommends change of orders for additions to, or deletions from approved drawings and specifications.

Reviews traffic signal, traffic sign and pavement marking plans prepared by consultants to determine if they meet City requirements; reviews traffic impact studies prepared by consultants; conducts traffic system analysis and traffic crash analysis; inspects traffic conditions on City streets and highways; prepares and/or reviews traffic work orders for traffic signals, traffic signs and pavement markings; approves work orders prepared by technicians.

May give assignments to, and review the work of engineers and sub-professional assistants when serving as assistant squad leader or project leader on a specific assignment.

Performs duties described above as applied to the following areas:

Engineering projects including bridges, retaining walls, culverts and related structures including structural components such as superstructures, substructures, and structural appurtenances; water and sewage treatment facilities, water pumping stations, sections of the water distribution system, recreation, airport and park facilities and structures; traffic road and highway sections, and related features; water distribution lines; storm water run-off, sanitary and intercepting sewers and appurtenances; structural inspection of existing structures, and the review and coordination of structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical details.

Assists in performing hydrological studies of the characteristics of streams and rivers and in studies of a wide variety of processes involved in the treatment and transmission of filtered water and wastewater; analyzes technical operations for programming on a computer.

Performs related work as required.

NOTE:

Only post-bachelorís degree experience above the trainee level is considered to be intermediate level experience.

A bachelorís degree in an acceptable area of engineering and registration as a Professional Engineer, or completion of a masterís degree in an acceptable area of engineering, will be considered equivalent to the one-year intermediate level experience requirement.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
