LABOR RELATIONS ASSISTANT
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is specialized personnel support work in the field of labor relations administration. The
employee in this class provides facilitating and support services in connection with contract negotiations,
interest arbitration, grievance and associated processes. Of special significance to the work is required
familiarity with confidential negotiation and labor/management data. Work involves frequent interchange
of information with the City managers and legal staff, and is performed under the direction of the labor
relations administrative staff.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Gathers personnel and other data concerning employee grievances; gathers class pay data and
calculates cost for one or more prospective settlements; prepares data in prescribed or devised format for
use by labor relations staff; makes grievance settlement cost impact calculations which incorporate, union
membership, inflation and other pertinent factors.
- Compiles data for and prepares exhibits which support management positions in contact
negotiations; tabulates summaries of contract clauses grieved to illustrate problem trends for discussion
by negotiators; accompanies City negotiating team to bargaining sessions and provides required support
services such as preparing and revising exhibits and agreements, collecting information and securing
equipment and supplies; compiles data for calculations of cost impact and prepares a variety of contract
documents during negotiations as new proposals and agreements occur.
- Maintains a variety of data files on labor market statistics, union membership, consumer price
variations, and other pertinent matters; maintains and processes grievance file and log book; prepares
reports in a variety of standard formats on labor relations data; reviews invoices submitted by arbitrators
and prepares and processes documentation required to have payments approved and processed by central
finance unit.
- Evaluates feasibility of computerizing reporting and recordkeeping processes for labor relations
unit; recommends changes in format, processes and procedures to improve system and simplify
computerization; provides computer personnel with data necessary for recordkeeping and report
programs; reviews and evaluates output of program and recommends improvements.
- Types correspondence, documents and reports in support of unit; maintains regulations, contract
files and similar materials; makes appointments and schedules meeting rooms and other facilities;
performs mail processing, routine filing and supply ordering tasks.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

requirements as approved on 11/96.)
- Completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Three years of clerical experience, two years of which has been performing clerical tasks in
support of labor relations administration.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
