OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY TECHNICIAN


GENERAL DEFINITION

This is technical and administrative safety work in a centralized safety office, or for a City Department with an established safety program for industrial settings. An employee in this class conducts regularly scheduled inspections to detect and document unsafe or unhealthy working conditions and to ensure compliance with governmental and accepted safety standards. The employee makes recommendations to reduce and eliminate hazards through policy, procedure or training. The employee acts as a liaison between the Department, third party administrators and the Central Safety Office. Work is performed under the supervision of an Occupational Safety Administrator.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

  1. The work must be performed in a large operating department or centralized safety agency.
  2. The employee must have responsibility for performing inspections in industrial settings, evaluating hazards and preparing reports and recommendations.

(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/05.)

NOTE:

Completion of an associate’s degree program in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering or a related field at an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience required.
