INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINEE
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is entry-level information technology work. Employees are assigned to work in several areas of technology and are expected to increase their knowledge to assist in the analysis, design, implementation, operation and technical support of one or more Information Technology functions, such as Operations, Technical Support, Data Networking, Telecommunications, Local and Wide Area Networks, User Support, Applications Development, Systems Design, Data Base Design, GIS, Website, Maintenance of Existing Applications and Systems and Business Analysis. Employees are expected to develop expertise and to specialize in one or more of the above areas or function as an Information Technology Generalist prior to promotion to the full performance level. Employees are supervised by a technical supervisor.

- Employees must work in assigned areas of information technology and are expected to increase their knowledge to assist in the analysis, design, implementation, operation and technical support of one or more Information Technology functions.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Current applicable software and/or operating systems.
- Personal Computer / Network system practices
- Microsoft (or comparable) Office Products used by the City, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
- Internet tools such as Telnet, and FTP
- Computer programming
- Computer languages if required by assignment
- Data Base Design, data normalization and relational data base concepts.
SKILL IN:
- Use of personal computer software.
- Use of the Internet to research and resolve technical issues and problems.
ABILITY TO:
- Learn a variety of Information Technology functions.
- Learn Multi-user operating systems such as Microsoft Windows NT, UNIX and Novell NetWare.
- Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Use computers to solve business problems.
- Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
- Effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, co-workers, clients, and the general public.
- Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Analyze and rewrite existing application programs if required by assignment.
- Perform hardware upgrades.
- Learn to install, configure and perform preventative maintenance on personal computers, network hardware and peripheral equipment, including printers and scanners.
- Demonstrate reliability through good attendance and punctuality.
- Complete work within a time schedule.
- Establish effective working relationships with associates, team members, departmental and administrative officials, supervisors, and other personnel.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 01/03.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems Management or a closely related field.
NOTES:
- Current city employees with two years of experience as a Computer User Support Specialist, Network Support Associate, Network Support Specialist or a comparable class immediately preceding the date on which examination eligibility is determined who have completed any bachelor's degree program will satisfy all requirements.
- For applicants with no Information Technology experience, the specified bachelor's degree program must have been completed no more than two years prior to the date on which examination eligibility is determined.
- Applicants currently working in Information Technology who have successfully completed the specified bachelor's degree program must also have successfully completed continuing education credits (equivalent to six semester hours) in Information Technology within the last two years.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
