BONUSES:
Employees who secure and maintain master-level Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certifications as a Fire Apparatus Technician or as an Ambulance Technician and master-level Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications as a Master Truck Technician (MT) or as a Master Automobile Technician (MA) shall be eligible for a lump sum salary differential ranging from $1,000 - $2,500 per year in accordance with the conditions of this regulation.

This is advanced level work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of medium and heavy duty and complex vehicles and related equipment. This class is differentiated from the Automotive Maintenance Technician class by the maintenance and repair of medium and heavy duty vehicles with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,001 lbs., including multi-axle compactors, fire apparatus and equipment, which are operated by Equipment Operators 2 or higher equipment operator classes and include complex auxiliary and control systems. Work involves conditions which can only partially be controlled, substantial physical effort, possible exposure to adverse weather conditions, working in tiring positions and the frequent lifting of heavy material. Instructing lower maintenance personnel in proper vehicle diagnosis, repair, maintenance and inspectional methods, techniques and procedures is a significant aspect of the work. Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior.

Presently employed by the City of Philadelphia with permanent Civil Service status in the Fleet Department with a Performance Rating of Satisfactory or higher;
AND
EDUCATION:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade;
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade;
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience at the full performance level diagnosing, maintaining and repairing automotive vehicles and related equipment, which has included experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy duty and complex vehicles and related equipment;
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.
NOTE:
Successful completion of a post high school approved automotive trade school curriculum for a minimum of six months up to a maximum of one year can be equated on a month by month basis for the general experience requirement.
Candidates have to have been performing automotive maintenance and repair work within five years prior to the date of the exam.
Employees are required, at the time of appointment, to possess and maintain a full complement of tools necessary to perform the assigned tasks.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to exam and during tenure of employment as Heavy Duty Vehicle Maintenance Technician.
Possession of a valid, proper class official safety inspection mechanic's license and a valid, proper class, official emissions control license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to exam as a Heavy Duty Vehicle Maintenance Technician. Employees will be required to obtain any license or certification by federal, state or municipal mandate if required by work assignment.

Only a departmental promotional eligible list for the Fleet Department will be established as a result of this examination.PERIODIC ANNOUNCEMENT:
The examination for this class is announced on a periodic basis. The eligible list established as a result will be merged as candidates are tested. Candidates who pass the exam and are placed on the civil service list will be retained on the list for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years.
