U.S. VETERAN’S PREFERENCE NOTE:
Ten points for veteran’s preference will be added to the scores of eligible veterans who apply for open competitive tests and pass the examination (for concurrent examinations, this applies only to applicants who are not currently employed by the City in a civil service position). You must be honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces. Attach a DD214, member 4, to your application if you wish your eligibility to be reviewed. Spouses of disabled or deceased veterans may also be considered.


DUTIES

This is training level work developing the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform social work. An employee in this class functions in a training capacity receiving instruction in the principles, practices, procedures and application of case work methods and techniques. Work includes exposure to the variety of counseling, referral, placement and/or adoptive functions required to provide services to children and youth, services to adults and aging, services to mentally ill and/or retarded, services for family medical care and/or for correctional rehabilitation. As the training period progresses, the employee performs increasingly difficult and responsible work. Contact with individuals, their families, representatives of various private and public welfare agencies, representatives of professional and community groups, and the general public is a significant aspect of the work.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Completion of a bachelor's degree program with major course work in social work, social services or a related field at an accredited college or university.
    NOTE:
    Examples of related fields of study are: a bachelor's degree in Sociology, Psychology, Education, Criminology, Administrative Law or Criminal Justice.

NOTE:
Candidates must submit a copy of their official college transcript with their application.


College students may apply for and take the examination for this class as much as nine months prior to the date of receipt of the bachelor’s degree. However, any candidate doing so will not be eligible for appointment until (s)he has presented evidence of successful completion of the undergraduate coursework.

LICENSES, REGISTRATION AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Common­wealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Social Worker Trainee, if required by work assignment.

PROJECTED EXAMINATION SCHEDULE
The announcement is open for applications on a continuous basis. The first examination is scheduled for the week of September 24, 2007 and will be given every two months thereafter until further notice.

RESIDENCY WAIVER NOTE:
The Civil Service Commission has waived the usual requirement that candidates must be residents of the City of Philadelphia for one year prior to date of appointment. Establishment of residency will be required of each non-resident hired not later than six (6) months after completion of the probationary period.

OPEN COMPETITIVE
Only an open competitive eligible list will be established as a result of this examination. Permanent City employees who compete will receive no promotional preference in this examination.
