To apply in person, please visit the Employment Application Center on the Concourse Level of the Municipal Services Building, 1401 J.F. Kennedy Boulevard in Center City Philadelphia. The application fee will be required at the time of application.

This application fee may be waived for individuals who demonstrate an inability to pay because of certain types of financial need.

There are also drop boxes for applications located on the 16th floor and the lobby of the Municipal Services Building.

DUTIES:

This is full time correspondence typing using word processing equipment and software to transcribe from such sources as dictation, handwritten roughs or smooth copy. In addition to general text content, an employee in this class transcribes data from dictation and source documents to create special documents such as, reports, legal material and articles, often involving technical usage and terms, use of all machine editing options and familiarity with department terminology and practices. Work may be performed in either a centralized or remote station environment and is customarily subject to productivity and quality standards maintained by a technical supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Successful completion of high school;
  2. and

  3. One year of clerical work experience within the last five (5) years which has involved as a dominant assignment, the use of work processing equipment and software, including the use of menu options to efficiently type, edit, rearrange and reformat the contents of correspondence and reports.

NOTES

  1. Applicants for this test must specifically indicate on their application the word processing software utilized as well as typical menu options utilized.
  2. Successful completion of a comprehensive word processing training program in the last five (5) years from an accredited college, university, or trade school may be substituted for some or all of the required work experience as determined by the Personnel Department. Thirty credit hours equate to the entire experience requirement. An applicant must attach a transcript or certificate indicating the number of credit hours of education/training received.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT NOTE:

Successful candidates will be required to have been bona fide residents of the City of Philadelphia at the time of and for one year prior to appointment.

PROJECTED EXAMINATION SCHEDULE

This examination will be held the week of July 11, 2005.

Will be related to the duties of the position and will consist of the following:

U.S. VETERAN’S PREFERENCE NOTE

Ten points for veteran’s preference will be added to the scores of eligible veterans who apply for open competitive tests and pass the examination (for concurrent examinations, this applies only to applicants who are not currently employed by the City in a civil service position). You must be honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces. Attach a DD214, member 4, to your application if you wish your eligibility to be reviewed. Spouses of disabled or deceased veterans may also be considered.

TEST REVIEW

ELIGIBLE LISTS:

CONCURRENT

Separate departmental and interdepartmental promotional eligible lists of permanent City employees, and an open competitive eligible list will be established as a result of this examination. The appointing authority may make an appointment from either one of the promotional lists until these lists are exhausted and, thereafter, may appoint from the open competitive list.

PERIODIC ANNOUNCEMENT

The examination for this class is announced on a periodic basis. The eligible list established as a result will be merged as candidates are tested. Candidates who pass the examination and are placed on the civil service list will be retained on the list for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years.
