Greater Grays Ferry Estates
formerly Tasker Homes

The Philadelphia Housing Authority is overseeing a dramatic change to the former Tasker Homes. Located in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia, the Tasker Homes public housing project isolated residents from the surrounding neighborhood, and became a haven for violence, drugs, and crime. Built in 1940 alongside the Schyulkill Expressway, it was the oldest public housing project in the City. PHA is demolishing 1,100 units of blighted public housing and transforming the area into a community of 550 new homes, apartments and senior living for individuals and families of varying income levels. A better street design reintegrates the new 40-acre development with the surrounding community, and calls for rebuilding nearby Lanier Park with a new community center, recreational area, senior center, new retail space and a workforce training center.

PECO Energy has provided the PHA with a grant of $232,100 for installation of photovoltaic solar energy systems at 18 homes on south-facing homes on Mifflin Street in the Greater Grays Ferry Estates. The grant is part of a $500,000 PECO commitment to support solar power installation in low-income housing in Philadelphia. The Housing Authority estimates that residents using the solar systems will save from $400 to $500 yearly in energy costs.
