Foster Grandparent

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP)
is a volunteer program uniting generations and enabling senior citizens to play an active role in a young person's life. The Foster Grandparent Program offers part-time opportunities to senior citizens by providing community service through established organizations.

This program, in existence for more than 30 years, provides an opportunity for low-income individuals to serve their community as mentors, tutors and caregivers. Foster Grandparents volunteer in schools, hospitals, drug treatment centers, day care centers, shelters and developmental centers. Children who have been abused and/or neglected, troubled teens, young mothers, premature infants and children with disabilities are among the recipients of the seniors' love and wisdom.

To be eligible for the Foster Grandparent Program, individuals must be 60 years of age and older.  Foster Grandparents must pass an annual physical examination, be willing to work 20 hours per week and attend monthly in-service training. All Foster Grandparents receive a tax-free stipend, travel reimbursement, meals, accident insurance and paid orientation.
