Mayor Nutter's Statement Regarding Union Contract Negotiations

June 30, 2008 – “I am pleased that DC 33 has agreed to continue negotiating with the City in good faith. I am also pleased that DC 47 has expressed its willingness to continue in these negotiations as evidenced by tonight’s contract extension.

These decisions mean that there will be no interruption in City services. All City workers will be reporting for duty and all City departments will be fully functioning.

We are committed to negotiating fair and reasonable contracts and it is certainly encouraging that all parties are working hard to reach a resolution. I appreciate the cooperative spirit demonstrated by all of our union leaders."


Terry Phillis, CIO, Tenders His Resignation
National search for a new CIO has begun
June 30 – Today, the Managing Director received the resignation of the City’s Chief Information Officer, Terry M. Phillis.
Mr. Phillis’ resignation will be effective July 31, 2008. A national search is underway to find a permanent Chief Information Officer. The Managing Director will appoint an Interim CIO by the end of the week.

Mayor Nutter Launches "Communities Working Together" Initiative
June 17, 2008 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter, Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Managing Director Camille Barnett launched the “Communities Working Together” initiative.
This is an 8 to 12 week pilot program in the 25th Police District to reduce violent crime and increase the quality of life. The initiative operates on the premise that safe, stable neighborhoods can only thrive if government, community organizations and residents work together.

Mayor Nutter Announces Summer 2008 Entertainment Series: Replacement for Dell East Concerts, City Hall Film Series
June 24 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced details of the Philadelphia Summer 2008 Entertainment Series at a press conference in the City Hall courtyard this morning.
Events include the City Hall Film Series: Movies Under Penn, and a series of concerts to replace the Robin Hood Dell East series this year,

Mayor Nutter's Commission on Construction Industry Diversity to Hold First Public Hearing on June 25, 2008
June 23, 2008 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s Advisory Commission on Construction Industry Diversity will hold its first Public Hearing: Identifying Challenges and Barriers to Minority and Female Representation in the Philadelphia Building Trades.
The hearing will be held in Room 400, City Hall from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday June 25, 2008.

Mayor Nutter Announces New Deal Expected to Bring Free Wireless to Philadelphia
June 17, 2008 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Wireless Philadelphia have reached an agreement with a local investor group to take over operations for Philadelphia’s Wireless Initiative.
Under the terms of the deal, the local investor group is assuming operation of the existing EarthLink infrastructure and will enhance and expand the network as part of their plan to eventually bring free wireless to the City. Philadelphia is excited about this opportunity to become the first major city in America to provide wireless access to all of its citizens at no cost.

DCNR Awards Greening and Recreation Projects in Philadelphia Grant of $1M
June 13, 2008 – Tomorrow Mayor Michael A. Nutter will announce that six projects in Philadelphia will receive support from a $1m grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
The award is being matched by funding from the City of Philadelphia and State Representative John Taylor for a total of $2m in project funding.

Philadelphia Public Library Announces Library Card and Summer Reading Initiatives
June 13, 2008 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and the Free Library of Philadelphia announced a summer reading program, to be held at all 54 library branches.
The summer reading program encourages children to continue reading over the summer break. Studies have shown that reading over that three month period has a pronounced effect on a young person’s reading performance measures in the fall.

Mayor Nutter, Deputy Mayor Schwartz Announce New Intermediary Ahead of Schedule
June 13, 2008 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Deputy Mayor Don Schwarz announced Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC) as the new Out-of-School-Time financial and program management intermediary. PHMC was selected through the open and transparent eContract process. The competitive process for the intermediary contract was completed ahead of schedule and will cost the City less money than Safe and Sound, which most recently provided these services under a no-bid contract. PHMC will begin providing services July 1, taking over the intermediary function for all summer programs operated by the previous contract provider. more » PDF icon


SEPTA-City of Philadelphia Joint Statement
Potential Transit Police Work Stoppage

June 11, 2008 - SEPTA remains optimistic that a contract agreement can be reached with the union representing the Transit Police without any disruption in their duties.
In the event that a settlement cannot be reached before the announced Transit Police work stoppage on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., SEPTA and the City of Philadelphia have worked together to develop a Safety Contingency Plan.

Mayor Nutter, Parks Alliance Announces Park and Recreation System Study
June 9, 2008 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and The Parks Alliance announced the results of a study on the value of the Park and Rec system.
The Parks Alliance commissioned The Trust for Public Land to quantify the benefits our Park and Rec system gives the City. The report found that the City and residents receive $23 million in City revenue, $16 million in municipal cost savings, $729 million in wealth generated for residents (through increased home values, tourism, etc.) and $1.1 billion in cost savings for citizens (free services, increased health, etc.) – altogether that’s many times more than the yearly budget for the Fairmount Park Commission and the Rec Department. more »

Mayor Nutter Appoints Members to the Redevelopment Authority and Recommends Executive Director
June 5 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced that he, Wendell Pritchett and Jennifer Rodriguez will serve on the board of the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Philadelphia (RDA).
Mayor Nutter will begin a full five-year term; Wendell Pritchett will fill the unexpired term beginning immediately and ending on March 28, 2009; and Jennifer Rodriguez will fill the unexpired term beginning immediately and ending on March 28, 2010.

Mayor Nutter Unveils Plan for Philadelphians Affected by Mortgage Foreclosure
June 04 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter unveiled the Philadelphia Mortgage Foreclosure Protection Plan today at a press conference at City Hall.
The Plan consists of a number of measures designed to help Philadelphia homeowners affected by the mortgage foreclosure crisis including free housing counseling services and a hotline that people can call if they are having trouble with their mortgages. The Mayor was joined at the press conference by Councilwoman Tasco, Councilman Jones, Sheriff Green, Judge Jones and Judge Rizzo. more »

Mayor Nutter, Commissioner Slawson Announce Summer Initiatives
June 3, 2008 – Today, Mayor Nutter and Commissioner Slawson announced new summer initiatives to increase the number of safe and enriching summer options open to young Philadelphians.
This year more than 18,300 opportunities for summer programming are available through the Department of Recreation, the Department of Human Services, and other partner programs. This is the greatest number of out-of-school time options the City has ever had. There is still time to sign-up for these programs and spaces are available. more »

Mayor Nutter Joins Statewide Advocacy to Support Governor Rendell's Proposed Education Funding Formula
Business and education officials also make case for proposal
June 02, 2008 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter joined with Philadelphia School District Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman, other education officials, and local business leaders at a news conference today to call for public support of Governor Edward G. Rendell’s proposed funding formula for education.
Mayors from across the state - Scranton, Erie, Allentown, Harrisburg and Reading - also held news conferences to call for support of the education proposal.

Mayor Nutter Announces New DHS Commissioner
June 02 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced today that Anne Marie Ambrose will serve as the new Commissioner of the Department of Human Services (DHS).
Ms. Ambrose will join DHS from her position as Director of Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Services at the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare on June 23rd. In the interim James E. Randolph, currently Deputy Commissioner for Juvenile Justice Services at DHS, will serve as Interim Commissioner, as well as Deputy Commissioner. more »
