WHAT: Mayor Michael A. Nutter will attend the topping-off ceremony for the new state-of-the-art 667,000 square foot Produce Terminal. The $235 million modernization and expansion of the Produce Terminal has created or retained almost 2,000 full time jobs at Terminal itself and employed approximately an additional 2,000 workers during construction.

Heart Healthy Philadelphia To Host Health Fair

WHAT: The 2009 Heart Healthy Philadelphia campaign is the largest and most comprehensive one-day healthcare initiative in Philadelphia. This all-day health fair at City Hall, is designed to help save lives, improve the quality of life for all Philadelphians and lower the cost of health care to society. The fair will include cardiovascular screenings, fitness, beauty, weight loss, cooking demonstrations; free samples of heart health-related goods, sponsor booths and music.

Annual Philadelphia Cares Day To Mobilize 10,000 Volunteers In A Single Day
WHAT: Greater Philadelphia Cares will launch the 16th Annual Philadelphia Cares Day Volunteer-A-Thon, the region’s largest volunteer day of service dedicated to the school children of our region. More than 400 hundred teams – and some 10,000 volunteers -- will spend their Saturday painting classrooms, clearing leaves & trash from playgrounds, and organizing libraries & storage closets at more than 90 Philadelphia schools, 18 Recreation Centers and a number of community organizations.

Volunteer teams of 2 to 200 people will take part; teams from local businesses, universities, faith-based groups, and families will participate. For many, volunteering on Philadelphia Cares Day is a tradition and a way to strengthen bonds with co-workers, family, and friends.

Philadelphia Cares Day 2009 is a great opportunities for area residents to play a role in creating a City of Service, as Mayor Nutter proclaimed Philadelphia to be on September 11, 2009.

BACKGROUND: On Saturday October 17th, Greater Philadelphia Cares will host the 16th annual Philadelphia Cares Day Volunteer-A-Thon in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia and presented by the ACE Charitable Foundation and SAP. More than 1000 schools and community sites will benefit from the marathon service of 10,000 volunteers who will revitalize these buildings to create more inviting environments. Volunteers will work side by side with students, educators, and community members to refurbish libraries beautify school hallways and classrooms, network computer labs, reface playgrounds, and more. More than 60,000 volunteer hours of service will be contributed on this day.
