City of Philadelphia calls for public support of Gov. Rendell’s proposed education funding formula
Proposal would provide $2.6 billion in additional state funds over six years

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter will join with local business and education leaders at a news conference on Monday, June 2, 2008. The news conference will be held at City Hall Room 202 at 2:00 p.m. to urge public support of Governor Edward G. Rendell’s proposed funding formula for education.

The Pennsylvania “Costing Out” study released in 2007 found that 471 of the state’s 501 school districts are under funded to the tune of $4.6 billion per year. Governor Rendell’s formula would fix Pennsylvania’s broken and outdated education funding system which relies too heavily on local property wealth. The formula would provide $2.6 billion in additional state funds for education over the next six years, with the School District of Philadelphia receiving $85 million the first year alone.

Business and education officials will be on hand to explain the advantages education attainment. For example, Philadelphians who complete their diploma can expect to earn twice as much in their lifetime as those who fail to earn a diploma.
