What is the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places? |
| |
The Philadelphia Register consists of more than 10,000 buildings, structures,
sites, objects and districts designated as historic by the Philadelphia
Historical Commission. The cultural resources listed on the Register
illustrate the City's history from before the arrival of William Penn to the
relatively recent past. The Commission maintains a file for each of these
properties; they are available for public inspection. The Commission's
jurisdiction over these resources provides protection for them against
unsympathetic alteration and demolition. |

Is the Philadelphia Register the same as the National Register of Historic Places? |
| |
No. Although the Philadelphia Historic Commission staff can tell you if a
property appears on the National Register, the Bureau for Historic Preservation
at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg actually
oversees the National Register in Pennsylvania. |
