The Commission's Rules and Regulations allow the staff to review and approve certain
specified exterior work without referral to the Historical Commission or its
Architectural Committee. If a completed application falls within this category,
the staff may approve the application upon submission. Making an appointment
with a staff member can save an applicant time in the processing of a permit.
If a project does not meet the criteria for staff approval, the staff will refer it for review to the Architectural Committee and the Historical Commission. |
| The Historical Commission serves as Philadelphia's historic preservation agency. It consists of fourteen members representing a breadth of perspectives. The Mayor appoints eight of the members to the Commission; the remaining six sit on it ex officio. The Commission has the authority to enter properties on the Philadelphia Register and to approve or deny building permit applications. It meets on the second Friday of each month. The Architectural Committee acts as a technical advisory committee to the Commission. It includes four architects, a contractor and a structural engineer. It meets on the last Tuesday of each month. |

In most instances, these guidelines will help determine the materials required
for submission to the Architectural Committee and the Historical Commission.
Applicants are urged to consult with the Commission staff early in the planning
process in the preparation of a permit application. The staff will assist in
determining the level of documentation needed for a specific project.
