Founded in 1682 by William Penn, the City of Philadelphia contains unparalleled
resources that span over three centuries of the cultural, social, political,
economic and architectural history of the City, the Commonwealth and the Nation.
By an ordinance passed in 1955, the Mayor and City Council created the
Historical Commission to preserve this heritage. The Commission bears the
responsibility for the designation as historic of buildings, structures, sites,
objects and districts of historical and architectural significance in
Philadelphia. The Commission regulates the appearance of these cultural
resources through its role in the City's building permit process. It also
offers technical assistance and guidance to the public with all services free
of charge.
