The STD Control Program provides the following services:
- maintains a citywide screening program for chlamydia and gonorrhea which targets adolescents and women of child-bearing age. Through early detection of infection and adequate treatment, complications including disseminated infection, pelvic inflammatory disease and lifelong infertility can be prevented. Continued spread of infection can also be interrupted.
- conducts screening for syphilis through community-based screening activities which focus on persons at increased risk of infection in such locations as soup kitchens, bars, drug rehabilitation centers, prostitute strips and crackhouses.
- conducts citywide surveillance for syphilis through assurance of compliance with regulations which require laboratories to report all positive tests to the Department.
- provides STD training to medical residents from various city hospitals through the STD Clinic in District Health Center #1.
- provides consultation to physicians and other health care providers managing patients with sexually transmitted diseases.
