Workplace Standards
Major Proects: Workplace preparation and abatement procedures described in Section VI of the regulations including the hiring of an independent API must be followed for major asbestos projects (80 sq. ft. or 40 lin. ft. or more)
Pretest, project and clearance sampling are required. For projects involving re-occupancy, the final clearance samples must be analyzed using TEM. The API must submit to AMS within 10 days of project completion the final visual inspection and the final clearance laboratory report for all major projects. The contractor must submit to AMS within 90 days of project completion notorized documentation of the final project cost.
Minor Projects: Workplace preparation and abatement procedures described in Section VII of the regulations must be followed for a minor asbestos project (more than 12 sq. ft. but less than 80 sq. ft. and greater than 3 lin. ft. and less than 40 lin. ft.). Pretest, project and final clearance samples are required. The final clearance standard is .01 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc).
Small Projects: Workplace preparation and abatement procedures including air monitoring as described in Section VIII of the regulations must be followed (less than or equal to 12 sq. ft. but more than 5 sq. ft. or less than or equal to 3 lin. ft. but more than 1 lin. ft.).
Incidental Projects: Workplace preparation and abatement procedures as described in Section IX of the regulations must be followed (less than or equal to 5 sq. ft. or less than or equal to 1 lin. ft.).
Private Residences: An asbestos project in a residential property of less than 4 dwelling units is never considered more than a minor project even if it involves the abatement of greater than 80 sq. ft. or 40 lin. ft. Residential projects may also be categorized as small or incidental, based on the amount of asbestos to be abated.
Projects with Alternate Methods: Any project requiring alternative methods must have the written approval of the Asbestos Project Inspector and must also have these methods approved in writing in advance from AMS. No Re-Occupancy: For projects such as a demolition where there will be no re-occupancy, final PCM clearance of less than .05 f/cc is required. The API must submit to AMS within 10 days of project completion the final visual inspection and the final clearance laboratory report for all major projects.
