Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Health Department require food establishments to submit a plan?

Proper planning promotes public health through the development of food establishments that are designed to meet food safety concerns and thereby reduce the incidence of food-borne illness.

When is plan submission for a food establishment required?

Plan submission is a requirement for virtually all newly constructed or renovated permanent and non-permanently located food establishments that handle food and beverages, including prepackaged foods. Although some limited prepackaged food establishments and residentially-based facilities are exempt from plan submission requirements, plan submission and approval prior to construction or alteration of a food establishment is compulsory in the vast majority of cases.

What is the general time frame in which plans are reviewed?

Normally, plans are reviewed within thirty days or less from the date that they are received. When practical, preliminary plan reviews can be completed within five working days. This is based on an employee working overtime. There is an additional fee for this service. Call 215-685-7494 (5) for more information.

Insufficient or incomplete plan review information is the most common obstacle in the completion of the plan review approval process.
