About Us

Fun, Fit & Free! was established in February 2000 as one of the very first acts of former Mayor John F. Street's administration. The former Mayor, being a true health enthusiast and caring for the health and welfare of the citizens of the City of Philadelphia, appointed a Health & Fitness Czar to lead in a first-ever citywide "health revolution". The Mayor's Office of Health and Fitness has been busy working in the community, educating and providing skills to those desirous of fighting chronic disease and overweight through lifestyle management.

Our goals and objectives:

In order for Fun, Fit & Free! to make a meaningful and lasting impact within the Philadelphia community, four major goals and six objectives were established to lead the work of the organization.

The four goals of Fun, Fit & Free! are as follows:

  1. To establish an effective infrastructure to implement programming and measure program effectiveness.
  2. To work with individuals and entities in the public and private sectors to assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of Fun, Fit & Free! initiatives.
  3. To increase public awareness of healthy and unhealthy behaviors through unique citywide programming.
  4. To develop programming that educates and inspires young people to develop positive lifestyle behaviors.

The six specific objectives are:

  1. To expand development of viable models for effective health promotion.
  2. Expand and identify new opportunities for creating conditions in the social structure that facilitate behavioral change.
  3. Utilize a social marketing approach to health promotion.
  4. Empower community and faith-based organizations for health education and promotion.
  5. Lay groundwork for meaningful collaboration among organizations, institutions, and corporations.
  6. Expand community leadership within the Fun, Fit & Free! structure.
