Memorial Mass on February 16, 2013 at Saint John the Evangelist Church - On Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 1000 hours, a Memorial Mass is being held at Saint John the Evangelist Church located at 21 South 13 Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. This mass is being held to honor the memory of four Philadelphia Firefighters that died while battling the great fire in 1899 that destroyed the church and several surrounding buildings. This mass is also being offered to honor all firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty, including Lt. Robert Neary and FF Daniel Sweeney, and for those who continue to dedicate their lives to protect and serve the citizens of Philadelphia. See flyer for more details.
CHANGE CLOCK – CHANGE YOUR BATTERY
The Philadelphia Fire Department would like to remind everyone to change the batteries in their 9-volt battery powered smoke alarms when we change our clocks and spring forward one hour on Sunday, March 11, 2012.
In conjunction with this message Fire Department Engine and Ladder Companies will go to hundreds of addresses to replace 9-volt batteries, distribute fire prevention literature and install state of the art, tamper proof, 10-year lithium powered smoke alarms on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11.
NOTE: Under no circumstances should a long life 9-volt size lithium battery be replaced with a 9-volt alkaline battery.
Philadelphia homeowners, in need of smoke alarms for their primary residence, should call the Philadelphia Fire Departments “Smoke Alarm Hotline” at 215-686-1176.
Any adult Philadelphia resident that would like to volunteer their time and represent a block or group in their neighborhood, serving as a Philadelphia Fire Department Fire Safety Representative should contact the Fire Prevention Division at 215-686-1382.
February 3, 2012 - NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY - On Friday, February 3, 2012, the Philadelphia Fire Department will participate in the “National Wear Red Day” in support of women’s heart health to help bring awareness of heart disease in Women and to help promote a heart healthy lifestyle. The day is being sponsored by the American Heart Association and is being supported by the Office on Women’s Health, The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and many other groups.

February 1, 2012, GRADUATION OF 30TH FIRE SERVICE PARAMEDIC CLASS
A graduation ceremony for the 30th Fire Service Paramedic Class will be held February 1, 2012, at the Philadelphia Fire Academy.
January 2010 - The Battalion Fire Prevention Book Awards were presented and Battalion 8 took first place this year.
January 2010 - A promotion ceremony was held at the Mayor’s Reception Room in City Hall.
4 Lieutenants were promoted to Captain,
2 Firefighters were promoted to Boat Pilot,
1 Firefighter was promoted to Boat Engineer,
1 Fire Paramedic was promoted to EMS Lieutenant,
This was the first posthumous promotion since being authorized by City Council. Lieutenant Stephen Cospelich was promoted to Captain.
March 13-14, and 20-21 - Over 2,000 smoke alarms were installed throughout the City for the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" program.
March 2010 - Opening of the Time Capsule retrieved from the cornerstone of the Old Fire Headquarters on Race Street. The event was held at the Fireman’s Hall Museum.
March 2010 - The annual 6 ABC Operation Save- a-life program was held at the Fire Training Academy. 6 ABC, Kidde Corporation donated more than 15,000 smoke alarms, and they were distributed to over 150 surrounding fire companies
March 12-14, 2010 "Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery" Spring Promotion
The Annual Battle of the Badges began on Sunday, March 9th, 2008 and ended on Saturday, June 7, 2008. This is the twenty-second (XXII) straight year Weight Watchers of Philadelphia, Inc., has sponsored this thirteen-week competition between the Fire and Police Departments.
The Police Department leads this competitive series with twelve victories to the Fire Department’s nine. The Department was the Battle of the Badges winners in 2007 and is motivated to close the gap as indicated by this year’s slogan, “No weighting here, we are ready to go for two in a row.”
On Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at 1100 Hrs. a memorial plaque was dedicated in the memory of Hoseman Walter Shemeld of Engine 22. Hoseman Shemeld died in the line-of-duty on December 26, 1898, while fighting a fire at 4th and Bainbridge Sts. The plaque dedication took place place at 4th and Bainbridge Sts.
