Deputy Commissioner John J. Devlin was appointed to the Philadelphia Fire Department in April 1973. He attended LaSalle University in the late 60's and majored in Psychology. Deputy Commissioner Devlin's 33 year career in the Department has allowed him to serve at every Officer rank in the Department from Lieutenant to Deputy Chief.

His field experience has allowed him to serve in the busiest areas of the City. He also has served as an adjunct instructor at the Philadelphia Fire Academy and as an instructor in the Officer Development Program. Before being promoted to Deputy Commissioner, he was head of the Department's nationally recognized Fire Prevention Division.

He and his wife Barbara live in Northeast Philadelphia and have two sons, Bryan and Sean.
