Description
Sitting on 10.0 acres, this recreation facility has a pool, a soccer court, a track, ten tennis courts, eleven basketball courts, two sports fields and four ballfields. The park land was originally a part of James Logan’s (1674-1751) Stenton estate, then passed to James Logan’s son, William (1718-1776) and then from William to his son, Dr. George Logan, M.D (1758-1821).
Following Dr. Logan’s ownership, the land passed into the hands of one “Hart” who laid out the property as a horseracing course in 1808. Waln, Fisher, Lovering, and Cope families purchased the 43 acre racetrack in anticipation of residential development.
In 1854 they presented it to the City of Philadelphia as a public park. In March 1871 by Act of Pennsylvania Assembly, Fairmount park Commission assumed responsibility for Hunting Park.
Initially 44 acres, the park nearly doubled with an addition of 43 acres section in 1903.
Between 1922 and 1927, several comfort stations, picnic pavilions, fireplaces, and tennis houses were constructed. Track, basketball, football, tennis courts and soccer fields were added 1920-1950s.
The recreation building, along with a new bath house was constructed in 1956. The track bowl, built in the hollow of the bathing lake, was added in 1975. Currently revitalization master plan (Wells Appel Landscape Architechts, principals) is underway.
Most recentely, Hunting Park has gotten a lot of attention recently, with a redesigned 90' baseball field, installed with the generous support of Ryan Howard of the Phillies. Micheal Vick's non-profit, Team Vick, announced the redesing of a football field on Hunting Park's grounds as well.
