Renewable Energy
In a series of firsts, the City's first photovoltaic (solar-electric) energy system sits atop the City's first comprehensive green building, the Police Forensic Science Center.
Want to know much energy from the sun is being captured and converted into electric energy at the site Beginning in spring 2005, youŽll be able to to track the energy production of the photovoltaic (PV) system in real time (data feed is in 10 minute intervals). Log-in on a sunny day, a cloudy day and a rainy to compare differences in energy production. The tracking system is designed as an educational tool for the general public and an analytic tool for building and renewable energy professionals. Solar in the City works access to the tracking system is being provided in an effort to help building owners and design professionals specify systems at maximum efficiency within the City.
The Energy Office is also a member of the Philadelphia Million Solar Roofs Partnership. Log-on to the www.Phillysolar.org website to obtain resource information about local designers and installers who can help you make clean, renewable energy system choices for your facility or home.
Support for the City's first PV system was made possible in part by a grant from the Sustainable Development Fund (SDF). SDF grants are available for business and homeowners. Log-on to www.trfund.org for details.
The Energy Office worked with local system designers Finley Shapiro of Finley Shapiro Consulting and William Marsten, AIA to install the 10kW polycrystalline system that features an innovative rack system (no roof penetrations) and a software program to track energy use. |
