R&D on Exterior Insulation

Sometimes changes in building configuration will alter the energy use and consumption.  Such is the case when the demolition of an imminently dangerous structure occurs in the middle of a residential block, thereby exposing the interior walls of the adjoining properties.  The City partnered with Philadelphia University and secured a grant for the design and application of a cost-effective exterior insulation that can be applied to exposed party walls.

The proposed exterior insulation system includes an innovative application of panels that are comprised of cellulose-based reinforcement encapsulated within foamed polymer, a cut resistant fabric layer and a finishing coat.  If successful, the City anticipates incorporating the treatment into demolition specifications.
